HERO OF THE YEAR 2013 - 2014

August 31, 2013 ~ place: the cove Taiji

David Risley 1 September 2013
A monumental thing happened in the Taiji cove yesterday, the first day of the 2013-14 dolphin hunting season. Even though the Taiji fishermen managed to capture a pod of about 60 bottlenose dolphins (still awaiting their fate), the Taiji cove was overtaken by Japanese protesters - a first in the history of the cove. While there is worldwide protest, many believe that if there is to be a change, it will come from within Japan and the Japanese people. Most make the mistake of blaming all of Japan for this travesty, when in truth, many Japanese people are unaware this is happening and those who do, find it as repulsive as you or I. Seeing this crack in the foundation was a remarkable sight. This gentleman actually went under the water and heard the cries of the captured dolphins and began to weep when he surfaced – it was both touching and surreal.

English translation of the sign per Scott White:
"It's not like we're trying to provoke or harass the fishermen. We believe that change must begin with corrective measures at a national level. We are no longer living in the era of hunting and eating dolphins. The time has come for us to consider as a nation the future of dolphin fishing."
If this is your first time exposure to this and you want to educate yourself fully on the topic, please review Martyn Stewart’s “Dawn to Death - The Dolphins of Taiji” here

It is said that the residents in Yulin of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region have the tradition of eating dog meat. The dog meat is especially popular among local residents in summer.

The eating of dog meat in China dates back thousands of years and it remains socially acceptable. The meat is especially popular in Guangdong and Guangxi. When food is scarce, dogs are eaten as an emergency food source around China.

To say that people in China eat dogs is something of a stereotype. Sure, some still do, but these days, more and more Chinese are buying dogs as pets and treating them like beloved family members. A growing movement against consumption of cat and dog meat has gained attention from people in mainland China. Chinese animal lovers have since 2005 organized many times of well-publicized protest against dog and cat eating.

A recent case occurred in April 2012 in southwestern China's Yunnan Province. More than 500 dogs destined for the slaughterhouse were saved when the truck that was transporting them was intercepted by about 200 animal lovers in China. And in 2011 Chinese media reported a similar dog rescue on a Beijing highway, when about 200 volunteers saved 580 dogs from death.
